The Effects of Weather

Protecting us from the power of nature

Your home is the last line of defense

lightningThe only thing standing between you and the elements is the house that you live in. This can be quite scary if you really consider the implications. We all know that taking care of home improvement projects can seem like a never ending task. So, where to begin? Well, from the top down of course! Think of the roof like the head of a body, it is in charge of all the major functions you need to protect your property. It is the closest part of your house to the sky and therefore takes the harshest punishment from the weather. Heavy snow, ice, rain, and other wet weather all need to be kept outside of your house, but they take a heavy toll on that poor old roof over your head!

Praying to the weather Gods will only get you so far!

Practical advise to help preserve your roof.

Now, keep in mind all this information is provided assuming you had a quality roof installed in the first place. Trust me when I say, more often then not this is simply not the case. The majority of roofing contractors simply install the cheapest and easiest roofing system available, then run off with all the profit that they can. This is because they have no intention of staying in business long. They may not be licensed or insured, and simply change the companies name when the problems and complaints start to pile up. To make this short and to the point…the first thing you can to in order to properly maintain your roof is to hire a professional roofing contractor in the first place!

Dangerous and not much fun but so, so important:  Get rid of all that heavy snow ASAP!roof snow remove

Once the snow has piled up past a half-foot or so you are risking potential damages to your roof. It is obviously best if you are capable of getting up there and actually shoveling the snow off the entire roof. However, there are tools for the less coordinated or adventurous such as the roof rake that allow you to accomplish similar results from the ground. This simple tool can be purchased at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot and is telescoping so that you can get that extra reach without over extending yourself. If you are a hard core do it yourself type person check out this article on how to make one yourself and save a little money. The DIY Snow Ripper Can Eliminate Snow From Your Roof in Minutes

Properly installed, this can be a life saver!

Heat Tape for heavy traffic problematic areas.

heat tapeA solution that should be utilized for any pesky or hard to reach areas that are a constant pain in the winter times. There are just some areas that you can’t get to in order to clean them off or that seem to collect a ton of ice regardless of what you do. Heat tape will help to melt the snow and ice in these areas, but make sure it is installed in such a manner that it will work with gravity. Some people have had great success running it throughout the gutter system as this is usually the first place to freeze up when it gets cold. The last thing you want to do is to install it somewhere in which it will just melt the ice and then the water just sits there with no where to go. It will find its way right into your house somehow or another. There are heat tapes available at your local hardware store for common problems, and there are commercial heat tapes that require a electrician to install. Analyze the situation and determine how severe of a problem you have before making a purchase.

Proper air flow will do wonders.

With enough ventilation, most of your problems should solve themselves.air flow

Most people do not understand how important ventilation is when it comes to roofing. You want the temperature in your attic to match that outside, and the only way to ensure this is with the proper installation of intake and output vents. With the temperatures closely matched you minimize the condensation and thus likelihood of the roof wood rotting or growing mold. When a roof is well ventilated rarely will you see any major issues with ice damning except in low slope areas. A commonly overlooked mistake is when the bathroom or dryer vents are dumping right into the attic. These need to be properly vented using a roof jack so that they do not cause unwanted temperature fluctuations & excess moisture from getting in your attic.

Animals love to find soft spots so they can make their new homes in your roof!

If you suspect any rotten wood up there, it is best to replace it sooner then later.

squirrel houseThe smallest of leaks can cause moisture to rot away that wood quicker then you would ever believe. As cute as they may seem you really do not want to deal with any animals taking up residence in your residence. Animals such as squirrels and birds will literally spend an entire day searching for that one soft spot that they can continue to chew until a hole straight into the attic has been formed. Once inside, getting them out can be tougher then evicting dead beat tenants from a rental property. If you have any concern about questionable looking wood on or around your roof, call a professional out as soon as possible. Better to be safe then sorry. Wood replacement is not all that expensive, and will save you a fortune in the long run by preventing the need for some major repairs.

Personal Sob Stories:

Have you ever delayed a roof repair only to suffer major consequences?

  •  Yes, it was a horrible mistake I will never make again
  •  No, we are lucky and should play the lotto!

Installation Backlog!

help!I NEED A NEW ROOF YESTERDAY…HELP!!!!   Installation Backlog

If you have read the news at all lately, you have seen that our industry has taken quite the beating from this springs weather. The construction industry is feeling the pressure more than any other.  It is also a seasonal business, which means they have even less time to get through their larger than usual backlog.

Roofing and construction companies are typically working at full capacity by mid March at the latest, and this year the massive spring wind storm kicked everything into high gear right away. Certain roofing contractors, such as American Standard Roofing of Southfield Michigan, work throughout winter…but this is a rarity now a days. It is hard to find companies like this because of the extra work that is required shoveling off snow before working, let alone paying the workers extra for the increased hazard and effort.  Temps have to hit at least 40 degrees, and in Michigan let’s face it…not even the weather man knows what will happen with the weather, even on the day of.  Now that the weather is much more permitting, you will find tons of companies with a back log for MONTHS on end.  Companies are scrambling to complete work, and to find the necessary skilled workers to complete these jobs.

The good news is that the materials ARE available.

This should make the bids more competitive, but again this all depends on demand for the work. This circles us backJob Duration around to scheduling.  It is very difficult for a contractor to arrange for delivery of materials when there are 20 other shipments that need to be made that same day. Therefore, it is a lot safer to do business with a company that is large enough to have a good relationship with their suppliers. This is just one other downside to hiring to two guys working out of the back of a truck. An associate at the local distributor ABC Supply said “Unfortunately there are only so many orders that can get filled in a day, and we have to service our larger clients first before we can even consider the smaller guys.”  While material delivery is only one small part of a successful installation from start to finish, it is a very important one.

Please bare with your local contractors on scheduling installations!

Remember, every rain day or extreme temp day we deal with sets them back even further.  However many jobs were scheduled for installation that day are now added to backlog, and have to be moved in to the already existing future load.  Extreme temps and hard work day after day means tired crews.  Contractors can never forget to take care of their installers, and this also plays a key part in the proper scheduling of installations.  The safety and well being of the teams always must come first.  Go easy on your contractor if your installation dates take a bit longer to arrive, as they must make the best and safest decision and consider weather, availability of material delivery and refuse can delivery, the well being of their teams and the ability to successfully complete the project without issue concerning all points, and the existing backlog that must be taken care of.

After the Storm: From the Vault

man-magnifying-glass-looking-coins-17275480Take a close look at your roof after the storm

These recent storms have created a lot of problems in Michigan,

from downed power lines to uprooted trees. But the most common type or problem most of our customers have had to deal with involve roofing.  The obvious storm related problems are easy enough to spot, such as shingles missing, holes, or gutter damage. But there are many other signs you need to look out for that are subtle and can be easily overlooked. If these issues are not addressed in a timely fashion they can lead to bigger problems down the road, from major leaks all the way to wood rot and structural damage.

Emergency calls from entire subdivisions

that all required immediate installation of a tarp due to storm damage. The hail hit so hard, they were left littered with dents and holes. Hail damage is not always so obvious; it can leave small indentations in the shingles that you would need to get up on the roof to see.  It is always better to call out the professionals after a major storm. It is not worth the risk going on the roof yourself without the proper safety equipment or precautions, and it is definitely not something you want to ignore just because it is not causing any immediate issues.  These little indentations leave your roof vulnerable to the elements making it easier for the sun to cook the shingles and for the rain to seep in slowly. Once the shingle has started decomposing there is no turning back, it is just going to keep deteriorating with time.  There are companies that will come out and perform a free inspection for you, so take advantage of that service.

Wind Warranties-A post from the vault

Is wind a real problem in Michigan?

This is the after math of the March 2006 storm in Nixa, MissouriAre crazy wind storms common? Not generally, and those that use it as a selling point are taking advantage of your anxieties. They say that shit happens, well so do storms. They can cause unbelievable damage to your home in a fraction of a second. But, spending additional money trying to prevent this is generally a waste. We do not live in tornado alley, and we are far from the coast with all of their funny named hurricanes. It snows a lot in Michigan, and once in a blue moon we will get to see a tornado or two. That’s it, plain and simple. Any salesman that tells you their shingle can withstand a tornado needs to clearly explain what magical nailing pattern they plan to use.

The details are important, but nothing to go crazy over.

This is roofing that we are talking about here, not the most exciting subject in the world. You can’t wear it or drive it, and you will most likely only look at it once after it gets installed. That being said, it is important to have a professional properly install a quality product in order to provide you with as much protection as possible. Unless you are electing to get a metal roof, or have special circumstances that require specific considerations, keep it simple when shopping around. Nearly every contractor has access to the same exact materials; anyone that tells you they make their own is probably stretching. Unfortunately, all too often, one product will be recommended over another because of price alone. This is an important factor, but make sure that you at least explore all of your options before making a decision.

So you are saying that my roof won’t blow away during a storm?roofing tornado

That is not exactly what we are saying. There are no special nails, installation procedures, or rubber shingles that will protect you if the conditions are bad enough. This includes any extreme wind, rain, or snow storms that occur. God forbid you ever experience one of these calamities personally. In such an instance, any damages are generally covered by your insurance company.  Clients of American Standard can easily call us for a copy of their records, as all records are now digitally kept.

Special circumstances that warrant further consideration:

Extremely steep roofs are one such exception to this rule, as they require more nails to hold the shingle in place properly. There are also many other details that need to be considered when working on steep pitched roofs, things that you should clearly go over with a roofing professional before signing a contract. Certain homes, such as those located directly on a larger lake, tend to get hit pretty hard with sporadic gusts of wind. Again, in such situations a similar strategy may be recommended. These are all things a reputable contractor would suggest anyhow, they are standard practices. Purchasing an upgraded wind warranty is most of the time just giving you some additional peace of mind. This soothing feeling can however cost a fair amount of money. Just like the cold hard cash that you just spend to get this boost of confidence, the additional warranty is just a thin piece of paper. There is nothing more to it, no actual substance behind it, except in your mind.  A good contractor will follow the proper nail and sealant installation patterns, and back their work without question with no additional charge.  That kind of peace of mind is priceless.
