Perfect Gutter Guard System: Our Thoughts & Expert Opinion

Gutter Guard System:

In today’s post, our panel of experts here at American Standard Roofing discuss the gutter guard system. We hear the term “perfect gutter guard system” from customers all the time. We wanted to clear up the common misconception. While different patterns and designs exist in the market, no single type of gutter guard system is perfect. However we can definitely strive for perfection.

Gutter Guard Systems in Market:

Drainage Issues

There are various types and kinds of gutter guards system available in the market. The concept of gutter protection is not new however. Homeowners have seen debris getting collected in gutters for a long time. Because of this, gutters have almost become standard for every home. Consequently, this need increased the demand for gutters in the market. And where this is a need and demand, there is marketing to sell. And where there is marketing, smart homeowners know that there will always be some half-baked truths in the marketing slogans. Terms like “no maintenance required” are just that.

We Recommend Professionals for Gutters:

Southfield MI Flat Roofers

American Standard Roofing has worked on almost every type of gutter and gutter guard system in existence. We have yet to witness a gutter or gutter guard system that was completely maintenance free. As with anything outside of your home, gutters need maintenance. We always recommend periodic maintenance for any gutter guard system. We advise that they be inspected, adjusted and kept an eye on.

What to Check?

Checklist

Below is a list of things our team advises to look out for:

  1. Oversized trees.
  2. Any protruding vegetation. That must be kept in check.
  3. Joints.
  4. Drains and outlets.
  5. Screens.
  6. Covers.
  7. Grates need to be examined as well.

All of these above mentioned things are important and need maintenance. Maintenance-free gutter and gutter guard system do not exist. That is a myth perpetuated by business marketing.

Product Fit for Home:

Gutters

Our team explains that cost, style and functionality vary with each product. The design, construction and composition of the guard is very important. So is the right balance between price and performance. It is up to homeowners to decide what they want.

Our Verdict:

Verdict

After all is said and done, we believe right balance is key. Market has several types of gutter protection systems that will assist in keeping your gutters clean. Homeowners however must realize that some maintenance will be necessary. A perfect gutter protection system simply does not exist.

Ladder Safety: Part II Continuation of Helpful Tips by ASR

Friend Ladder

Safety Precautions For Homeowners:

Our experts here at American Standard Roofing continue with our two part special on safely climbing roof. We pick up where we left off talking about ladder safety and safely climbing roof.

6. Sturdy Footing for Ladder’s End:

Rubber Ladder End

Our team recommends install rubber safety shoes on the ladder’s feet if your ladder already doesn’t have those. This is especially important if the ladder is to stand on a slick or slippery surface.

7. Don’t Overextend Ladder:

Overextended Ladder

This is one of the important ones. Overextending the ladder can cause the ladder to be more flimsy. Make sure that ladder extension is locked in place and that no section is extended more than three-quarters of its length. This will ensure a sturdier ladder and help in safely climbing roof.

8. Don’t Carry Stuff While on ladder:

Rope Over Ladder

We have seen a lot of ambitious homeowners lift tools and other stuff when going up the ladder, to the roof. It may seem trivial but it is a big issue when it comes to safely climbing roof. Be sure to pull materials up a ladder with a rope, and have a place to store them at the top. Carrying them over your shoulder gives you less stability and is an accident waiting to happen.

9. Keep Weather Information Handy:

5 Day Outlook

Our team recommends that homeowners work on the roof only if the weather is warm, dry and calm. We highly recommend against climbing the roof when there is a chance of lightning. Severe weather is just something that needs to be accounted for when safely climbing roof.

10. Always Get Professionals for Advanced Help:

ASR Logo

While DIY (do-it-yourself) projects are good to undertake from an economic perspective, our team advises homeowners to contact professionals for advanced level of work. Some roofs have high pitch and slopes and it can become dangerous for novice, first timers to get up there and tackle problems.

Safely Climbing Roof: Ladder Safety Tips by ASR Part-I

Safely Climbing Roof

Safely climbing roof is not as easy as it sounds. This is something our team here at American Standard Roofing agrees upon. We have been hearing a lot about accidents. We specifically hear horror stories about people climbing roof. This week, our team will do a two part special on ladder safety. Here is part-I of our two part special.

Safely Climbing Roof is Good For You!

Safely climbing roof keeps you from not becoming an accident statistic. In terms of home improvement, falling off a ladder, or for that matter a high spot, say like a roof, is no joke. According to a study conducted by CDC (Center for Disease Control) last year:

The study, published in the most recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), found that falls remain a leading cause of unintentional injury mortality nationwide, and 43 percent of fatal falls in the last decade have involved a ladder.

Among workers, approximately 20 percent of fall injuries involve ladders, and among construction workers, an estimated 81 percent of fall injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms involve a ladder.

Safety Precautions For Homeowners:

Our team has come up with a list of measures that will help homeowners and project undertakers in safely climbing roof and not have any accidents. Hopefully adhering to these safety measures and tips can stop these terrible accidents we keep hearing about.

1. Unnecessary Walk on Roof:

Footsteps

Avoid walking when not necessary. A good tip from our experts: stay off tile or slate roofs completely. They are slippery and breakable.

2. Find Proper Footing:

Walk Carefully

Make sure you step carefully once on the roof. Stepping on rotted and brittle old roofing material can cause falls and accidents.

3. Appropriate Clothes and Footwear:

Proper shoes and clothes

Safely climbing roof requires you wear loose, comfortable clothing. That and proper footwear is also necessary. Something like clean, dry rubber-soled shoes, with good ankle support comes recommended from our team.

4. Have a Friend Help:

Friend Ladder

Two is always better than one. At least when it comes to safely climbing roof. Have a friend or family member come help out or stand by the ladder when trying to climb roof.

5. Standing Properly on Ladder:

Ladder Standing

It is important to stand properly on the ladder when safely climbing roof. Never stand on the top two bars (or rungs) of the ladder. At least two rungs should extend above the eaves so you can step directly onto the roof. It is safer that way because of weight distribution between you, roof and the ladder.

Planning Home Improvement: Don’t Overwhelm Yourself

Planning Home Improvement

Planning Home Improvement:

In today’s post our panel of experts here at American Standard Roofing discuss planning home improvement. Most of our customers are very ambitious when it comes to making upgrades to their homes. That said it is very important for homeowners to take it one step at a time when it comes to planning home improvement.

The Right Order To Do Things:

The right order

Planning home improvement is not easy. Our team has come across customers who start new home improvement projects in the wrong orderConventional wisdom dictates that if your roof needs replacement, you do not start painting your home. However, we are all human. We usually get caught up in the moment and make emotional decisions that we later regret.

Our team took time out to come up with some basic guidelines for planning home improvement. Homeowners should be able to bring some chaos to order with these. Following these basic guidelines will simplify your life drastically. That said, we also highly recommend hiring a professional for all roofing needs.

1. Start At The Top:

Top Down

Our team of experts indicate that planning home improvement should start from the top. That means your roof. A leaking or damaged roof can cause most damage to your home. We recommend getting an inspection by a reputable roofing contractor. Most will perform this service for new customers for free in hope that they will use the service when needed. A word of caution however: if you call a smaller company they may be inclined to sell you a repair or replacement that is not even needed. Always have work done by reputable contractors, period.

2. Work from Outside to Inside:

Outside to Inside

Planning home improvement, after the first step, should be followed by working from outside to inside. We advise homeowners to focus on exterior of the house after they have their roof taken care of.  It is important to know that it is the little things that will eventually turn into big issues. Small things like not maintaining gutters or painting every few years can come back in the shape of repair costs. Loose siding, rotten fascia boards, missing caulk etc, are all tiny things that you can take care of yourself. In addition to these things, if there are other major issues on the outside, do not be hesitant to call professional contractors. That move can end up saving homeowners a lot of money.

3. Structural Foundations:

Leaks

Our team advises that after the first two steps, slowly work your way back into the house. The homeowners focus next should be on structural and foundation issues. Check for any new cracks that appeared in your basement or any signs of leaking. If you have an exposed ceiling, make sure you don’t see any bending or warping of the floor joists. Cracking in the drywall can be a sign of too much moisture or the house is settling. If you suspect the former, make sure that your humidifier or furnace is set properly. In addition, our team recommends keeping your eye out for condensation build up on windows. The worse part is that condensation can cause mold to grow in your home.

Break It All Down In A List:

Professional Assessment of Roof

When it comes to planning home improvement, slow and steady wins the race. Our team advises to remember to take it one project at a time. Make a list of things to do. Make sure that list is in the right order.  Do not start tearing into multiple rooms at once. It is best to break it down into a manageable disaster. This also prevents you from getting in over your head financially.

Roofing Contractor Qualities: Maximizing Home Improvement Efforts

Roofing Contractor Qualities

Roofing Contractor Qualities:

In today’s post, our panel of experts here at American Standard Roofing discuss specific set of roofing contractor qualities which homeowners should look for. As the season transitions beautifully, we know that most homes would require work pending from last winters. Most homeowners have no clue about roofing contractor qualities they should look for when hiring roofers. We will break it down in this post and hopefully give a good idea to our readers.

1. Contractor Should Have All Paperwork Complete:

Easy Roof Financing

We can not stress this enough. Always hire a contractor whose company is licensed and insured by the local governing authority. This can be the city where they do business or the state. as well as insured. More importantly, homeowners should always ask for proof of insurance. Our team here also recommends asking if the contractors is covered for workers compensation and general liability as well.

2. Always Get References:

Referral

We recommend that homeowners should always get references from people (friends, family coworkers etc). This can help in narrowing down potential hires. It can also help in determining how reputable and reliable the contractor is.

3. Contractor Should Provide a Clear Quote:

Checklist

We recommend this because we have seen our fair share of shady quotes written on torn pieces of papers handed out to customers. A proper contractor should be able to give a clear and precise quote on preferably a company letterhead. This speaks volumes of that company’s reputation and quality.

4. Have Designated Company Name & Address:

ASR Logo

A roofing contractor should always have a company name and address. You do not want someone working on your roof or in your home working out of the back of his pickup truck. A shady contractor is not what homeowners should agree on. It reflects not only poorly on the company but also the quality of work the contractor might do.

5. Certification from Material Manufacturer:

Certification

We also highly recommend certifications. Contractors should be certified through material manufactures. Many manufacturers offer certifications. It is in the best interest of homeowners to ask for these certifications. Certified contractors knows they know how to handle the material. This means clean and proper installations.

Residential Roof Maintenance: Tips From American Standard Roofing

Residential Roof Maintenance

Residential Roof Maintenance:

Residential roof maintenance is an important part of home improvement. In today’s pot, our panel of experts here at American Standard Roofing will discuss residential roof maintenance in detail. While we have covered this numerous times in the past, this issue is important enough for us to write about it again.

Michigan Extreme Weather:

Severe Weather

Michigan’s weather is not a secret. We have an extreme temperature be it the bitter winters, the harsh rainfall season or even the glorious sunny warm days. Homeowners always want their roofs to withstand this extreme weather. Our team here believes in the saying “prevention is better than cure”. We find that is is considerably easier and affordable to keep a roof well-maintained rather than having to make major repairs or replace it after a disaster. Roofs here in Michigan face strong winds, hail, ice, snow and intense sunlight. It is essential that they are properly maintained.

Good Tips:

Helpful Tips

Our team has come up with these very basic yet effective tips for homeowners. Follow these preventive tips and you might not have to shell out big bucks in repairs and replacements later on. These basic tips are as follows:

1. Keep Debris Away:

Maintenance Gutters

The first tip we like to give for preventive residential roof maintenance is this: keep debris away from your roof. Leaves and other small branches like wood can retain moisture. This will harm your roof over time. It can also become a fire hazard as debris can catch fire rather easily. We also recommend homeowners check building’s gutters and downspouts to ensure that debris is not clogging thereby forcing water to back up into the roof and other areas. This can cause damage to the structure. In short, by trimming trees and keeping debris away from building structure, homeowners can avoid costly repairs.

2. Regular Roof Inspections:

Passing Home Inspections

Our team also recommends regular roof inspections for good residential roof maintenance. We recommend periodic inspections to make sure the roof stays maintained. An inspection will also show any weaknesses like cracks, cuts or damages. We install a lot of shingled roofs. For shingled roofs, we highly recommend checking for missing shingles. For metal roofs, we advise to keep an eye out for dents and rust marks.

3. Standing Water Is Bad:

Emergency Exceptions

Standing water anywhere is bad for any building structure. This is especially true for roofs. Stagnant water standing anywhere on a roof is a red flag. Prolonged water beds on top of your roof can lead to soft spot and other moisture damage which will ultimately lead to costly repairs. Sometimes even a complete replacement is necessary simply because of standing water damage caused to the roof.

4. Be Proactive:

Preventive Measures

Another tip for residential roof maintenance is to be proactive. Proactive homeowners save a lot more money than those homeowners who just react to issues and fail to take preventive measures. A well maintained roof also survives extreme Michigan weather much better than a less maintained one. A roof that is not well maintained is bound to have leaks, cracks and deteriorating roofing materials. This will end up costing the homeowners a lot of money in repairs or even replacement.

5. Get Professional Help:

Winter Roof Replacement

Our final tip for homeowners looking into residential roof maintenance is to get professionals for any job. A well reputed, experience contractor knows what he or she is doing. They can give a deeper assessment of the roof condition. They will also be able to do a better job of repair or replacement than a do-it-yourself job. We highly recommend going this route.

Roof Shingle Color And How To Pick Your Color: Guide by ASR

Roof Shingle Color

Roof Shingle Color:

In today’s post, our panel of experts here at American Standard Roofing advise on how to pick the right roof shingle color. The task might seem easy enough but various factors go in deciding the right roof shingle color.

Color Guide

It’s Just a Color Right?

Well, true. But when replacing a roof, picking a roof shingle color can become quite a task. We have seen a variety of customers in our business.

Just Color

Needless to say, everyone has distinct taste and preferences. Consequently, this makes it harder for us, as expert, to weigh in on best roof shingle color. We don’t exactly have a one size fits all formula. What we do have however are some good tips for homeowners.

Observe Other Homes:

Observe

Our team recommends observing homes and neighborhoods with colors you have in mind. We also advise particularly noting different combinations of exterior facades such as trim, brick, stone and/or siding. Once homeowners have shortlisted the homes and neighborhoods they like, they can then shortlist. This will help in giving homeowners a real feel of what their home may look like.

Get Sample Shingles from Us!

Sample

Roof shingle color is very important. Our team advises that it is always best to get full size samples. This will show how the roof shingle color looks in person. Always get a full-size sample from the contractor as they have those. Our team highly recommends not to make a final shingle color selection from manufacturer sales brochures. They do not show the real colors and do not give a fair idea.

Available Colors:

Available Now

Our team explains that some colors may not be available in certain geographic areas. Homeowners should always contractors about availability. Roof shingle color can get very deceptive. We advise customers to look very closely at granules of the shingles. In addition, we also advise making sure you keep in mind the siding and other neighborhood home colors. You want your home to stand out, but only in a good way.

Check Previous Work from Contractor:

Sample Work

Finally, this is a big one. Once color preferences have been narrowed, homeowners should always ask contractors addresses of some homes where complete installs have been performed. It is good to take an idea. It’s worth the time to drive by and have a look. It is easy as well because most roofs can be viewed from the street. That should give a great idea how potential home would look like.
